The 6th annual BUST Craftacular was yesterday, but if you didn't get all your shopping done, have no fear! The party continues all week long! BUST has partnered with Hendrick's Gin and Gallery 151 to host a sunset shopping spree from Monday, December 13th to Saturday, December 18th. With 11 or so vendors each night, the pop up shot will be open every day from 4pm-9pm with Hendrick's Gin cocktails available some nights.

Each year, in early December, the first floor of P.S. 321 is transformed into a magnificent Holiday Crafts Fair. Over 90 vendors rent tables and sell their wares. Additionally, the PTA sells food and runs a kid's arts & crafts area. Last year the event raised over $16,000 for the school.

I signed up for thing-a-day again this year. Unlike last year, I plan to actually participate. (by making a thing a day every day in February... and by posting pictures so you can see!) How many rings can I make in a day?

I think I was feeling a tad over ambitious when I left a KAZILLION rings in various states of doneness all lined up on the windowsill last night. I had intentions (delusions really) of finishing them ALL today. HA!

Now what I'm thinking is (hopefully) I can finish 3. Including one that is just about done. Forget the big "unveiling" of my new stuff on Saturday. Honestly, the thought of NOT having a huge change over right now makes me really happy. I don't want to rush it and have it all be crap, after all. Instead, I'm aiming for organization and maybe even some sleep!

Also...

It's supposed to rain on Saturday, like really rain. And on Sunday, our rain date, it's supposed to rain more! Hooray! In other words, Crafts in Chelsea will still take place this Saturday, 10am-5pm RAIN OR SHINE! I hope to see all your puddle stompin, smiling faces this weekend!!!

1. I love hot buttered rum. It's perfect on chilly nights like tonight. Yummy. Yum. (psst. the link is for Emeril Lagassi's fancy hot butterd rum. I usually just put rum and brown sugar in a mug with a pat of butter and pour boiling water over it. Not fancy, but still good! So good!)

2. With rum in my tummy, I'm feeling warm. And happy. And feeling like giving stuff away. (My goodness, if you only KNEW how overwhelmed I've been trying to catch up on making stuff. It's like I'm cramming for a midterm. Only, I'm the teacher, and I'm conflicted as to whether I should cut my students some slack or crack the whip. Very confusing for the students! I've been making earrings and pendants and rings with NYC street dirt for a while now, but I've been thinking, is your street dirt the same as my street dirt? I wonder.

I wonder enough that I want to see it, and I wonder enough that I want to make some jewelry with it. I'm thinking I'll make a necklace with 50 states of dirt... but maybe when I actually get the dirt I'll think of something else. Got some ideas? Tell me. I'd love to travel around, collecting street dirt and exploring, but well... I haven't won the lottery yet.

So here's what I'm proposing...

I'd like to conduct a very unscientific survey of US street dirt, and I'd love your help. Send me your street dirt, and I'll give you free jewelry (in the form of a $20 coupon)! I'm only collecting street dirt from the United States right now, but that may change in the future.

Interested? Here's what to do:

1. Check to see if your state is still wanted. I only want one baggie of dirt from each state. (VERY unscientific, I know. heh.) I'll cross a state off the list as I receive your dirt.

2. Bag some dirt. Ideally, it will be swept from the street or sidewalk, but if it's not, I'll pretend not to notice. Fill a sandwich bag about halfway or so.

3. Email me at sayo@sarustar.com for the address where to ship your dirt. Please make sure you mail it from the state your dirt is from, and don't forget to include your contact info.

That's all I can say. It's 4 PM. I was sitting and reading the paper with a nice ice cold glass of wine (after walking a few miserably hot miles in the blazing sun to avoid an unneeded extra subway fair- I try to limit myself to 2 rides a day if I don't have an unlimited metro card- another story.) Anyway, I was happily reading yesterday's paper about the new Hollister store (that thoroughly creeps me out) and about a guy who makes gps pictures when he runs, when the sky went black. Another crazy storm coming. I guess canceling A&F McCarren Market was a blessing in disguise! Which reminds me, I've got to get my sale stuff ready!

Oh where do I begin? Let's see...
I've been having a bit of blog block lately. No apologies though, I kind of hate that. I had planned to just point you toward some other worthy reads, but then I stumbled upon these!!!
Natymosko's Etsy shop is filled with fantastic milk crate furniture. Forgive me if I sound a little off base, but personally, I have been secretly wanting a milk crate or two for a while now. Not a secret anymore. I really think they are the perfect life accessory. (Yes, I said life accessory.) Heh. I mean, they can be used as a chair, a step stool, a bike basket, to carry things like containers of milk, a cage for some kind of animal, the possibilities are endless. I'll stop there and let you do some imagining of your own. But why stop there when I can buy myself some more time to play? Here's some creative bloggers you're sure to enjoy...

Where has the time gone? Well, before I head to Cape Cod for the weekend, here's a few things I've been meaning to mention:

I have been pretty busy in the studio lately, and when I get back from the wedding, I'll tell you all about it! Right now, I'm headed to the gym to burn off some of this ridiculous energy. Two summers ago, I went to Africa and brought back some pretty amazing Masai earrings. (the ones on the right) They've been quietly hanging in my room ever since.

However, with my recent desire to make my jewelry BIGGER, I've brought them into my studio...

The earrings on the left are my first pair directly inspired by them- it's hard to tell from this picture but they're sterling silver with teeny tiny pearls. So much for BIG, but I really like them! I promise to take better pictures when I have a camera that's not my phone...

As for now, I'm going to try for big again and see what comes. I'll let you know.

It was a BEAUTIFUL day at the park yesterday! Slow day for jewelry sales, but a nice outing none the less. I love my new roll-top tables!I don't like my bed stands showing. Just so you know.
Saru the monkey made lots of friends, as usual. I was happy that no one asked to buy him this time :) Do you see my new earring stands? The ones I made when I was "cleaning" the other day, heh. I like them, but now I think I need bigger earrings! Speaking of which, I'm pretty anxious to get into the studio soon!
I still think my canopy is pretty. Luckily (or not?) the rain didn't touch it until AFTER it was safely packed up and piled on top of all my stuff ready to leave the park. Yup. My dad came at the end to help me get home. (wasn't that nice?) As soon as I finished packing up, I mean literally, within seconds, the sky opened and dumped buckets of water on us. I tried to get him to smile for the picture and he said, "That's not funny." Hehe. We called a car service, but when we got to the corner, there were people stealing cabs left and right. What a mess! When we finally got settled in the car back to the city, the rain stopped. I feel like there should be a moral to this story...
But I can't think of one. The end.

The last few haircuts I've gotten were free Bumble and Bumble haircuts... now I want something different. I want to chop it all off once and for all!! (before growing it long again as usual) Well, not chop it chop it, but, uh, you know, I want a change. The last time I paid for a cut, I went to Kiwa Salon, and i really liked it. I checked out their blog and found these directions, which totally sealed the deal. I'm going to Kiwa tomorrow to cut off all my hair. Hooray!

I did not heed the widget warnings. I started screwing around with my templates and lost all my info. I'm happy because I figured a bunch of things out. I'm sad cuz all my stuff is gone. And it will stay gone for now because I have other things to get to. Um... Friday. Friday will be my designated blog tampering day. Expect a bleak and boring "Working Title" blog until then. Oh and yes, I did make it to Renegade yesterday! It was a glorious day! (Except for the starvingly wandering around Brooklyn only to find every restaurant closed until dinner part) Check out some pictures on Flickr. (I took none)
And then at night, I saw The Hangover. HILARIOUS. I wasn't expecting much. It was great. Two thumbs up. Yup.

From this picture, it doesn't look all that inviting. I know. Pretend it does though. As I was walking down the street today (this is the really short version of the story) I came across this street fair on Bleeker Street! I was surprised to see that in addition to the numerous sunglasses tables and too cheap import stuff, there were at least more than a handful of people selling their handmade wears. Yay! There was music and cheap food and sunshine! AND it's gonna be there Sunday too! Bleeker Street between 8th Ave and almost all the way to 6th. Neato Freato.

On a sad note, I didn't make it to Renegade today so I have nothing to report on that end... but I'm going tomorrow! Hooray! Hehe.

She's a creative blogger. Coco has some great ideas. (like taxidermied body parts as jewelry displays) She also makes some pretty painted boxes and stained glass. In her post entitled "A Two Penny Post", she questions whether self-fulfillment can be found in art or in life. Personally, I think art is a part of life. It's hard for me to imagine a life without it... certainly not a fulfilled life. (And if not art, a substitute for art... sports? One of the great things about my dad's building (where I make jewelry) is that tenants leave things on the radiator by the front door. Not junk, but things they think others might want- books, videos, etc. The other day, I found a stack of plaques piled up and thought I could make a cool new jewelry display! I'm going to strip them and sand them down a bit... but then what? I can't decide. Any ideas?

Finally, something new! Check out my new pearl necklace that was seen on the Martha Stewart show- modeled here by the lovely Miss Miya. Or was possibly seen on May 14th! Hehe. Yup, because I was in the audience! Unfortunately, I had to work so I missed its airing. Did you happen to catch it? The show was her staff's favorite family recipes. I'm hoping I'll be able to see it on marthastewart.com in a while. I was seated right above the audience members they kept talking to (the staff's family members) and saw myself on the monitors A LOT. So I think that means you could me on TV! Hehe! I was wearing a bright purple shirt and sitting next to Kellan in a purple dress. Fun fun.

DISGUSTING! (a quick rant)

Disgust. Complete and total disgust. Utter disgust. Disgusted disgust. No, not the kitten poo. (My once upon a time kitten had kittens and one day one of them started pooping. I thought his intestines were coming out of him and I freaked... when I realized it was just poop, I grabbed my camera- but that's not what this story is about.)
Last night at work, someone stole my camera. Again. I know, fool me once, blah blah blah. Well, I thought I was being careful- since my wallet and camera was stolen from work six months ago, I've always made sure to keep my wallet and phone in my pockets (I got new work pants- with pockets) and I keep a lock on my bag. I rarely have anything in my bag, but I always lock it up anyway. Last night, however, I had my camera- the one my boyfriend so kindly bought me to replace the last stolen one, and my paycheck in my locked bag. Ugh. You know how you can still open a locked bag if the zippers aren't "locking" zippers? Well, someone opened it and took my stuff. Again.
This morning as I was heading out to file a police report, I opened my apartment door, and guess what I saw! Yup, you guessed it! A huge pile of human feces. All over the front step, all over the front door. I guess someone couldn't hold it all the way to McDonald's. Sorry, no picture-- kitten poo is much cuter, I promise.
So I hopped over the sh*t to get to the police station where the lady (who was incidentally much nicer and more helpful than I was expecting) informed me that it's actually pretty easy to cash another person's paycheck. Great. Living in New York is fun.

The First Ever Artists and Fleas Market in McCarren!

Well, the day started out looking a little bleak. I forgot my camera (and my monkey), we had some serious tent mishaps, and the weather report said it would RAIN RAIN RAIN!
But it all worked out wonderfully in the end! Yes, the Market in McCarren was lovely. I've prepaid for 3 more Saturdays, and I will happily return soon. (Stay tuned to find out when!) As you can see from the picture above, I had plenty of room. Next time I will either share my space, or um... expand. But I think I'd rather share. Anyone want to share a spot with me? I'm nice, I promise.

Oh yeah, and on a side note, I've realized (what I already knew) that I pretty much suck at selling. Making things is what I like. Telling people about how cool what I make is and giving them reasons why they need to buy it= awkward silence and jumbled words. Nope, talking to strangers does NOT come naturally to me, encouraging strangers to give me their money is even harder, and while I would LOVE to hire a sales person to do it for me, I know that's something I have to work on. Just wanted to put it in writing.

So, I guess I can't email pictures to my blog, but I can text. (I got a text from blogger help saying that Sprint doesn't support it. Boo.) Too bad, it would have been cool. Texting to my blog is more or less the same as "tweeting" texts as far as I'm concerned so I probably won't use it much as I'd rather "tweet" texts than "blog" them. (it just sounds a little happier) We'll see.

The Market in McCarren, a weekly (Saturday) outdoor indie artist/designer market run by Artists and Fleas, officially starts this Saturday, May 2nd! I'm excited to announce that I'll be there for opening day! I'm not quite sure what all will be in store this weekend, but there is rumored to be a fantastic cafe with local and organic food, neato themed activities and entertainment, and of course, all kinds of cool stuff for sale. Mother's Day is right around the corner, btw. Don't forget your mama.

The Market in McCarren will be open every Saturday (well, almost) from 10am-6pm, rain or shine!

Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of sharing a space at the Brooklyn Flea's indoor pop-up market with two lovely ladies of The {NewNew} team! Misty of La Pistolera and Anne of poofNY. (Go ahead, check out their shops, buy something, and then come back.)
Although the promised thunderstorms didn't materialize until late Sunday night, the turnout at the Flea wasn't quite what I'd hoped for...Chances are I wont be selling there again, HOWEVER, I certainly plan to shop there soon! It's a great place for cool vintage finds and some pretty tasty Mexican food. And an added bonus- The {NewNew} has an ongoing spot so each week is a new chance to meet (and shop in person from) some very talented New York Etsians! See you there:)

It's almost April already??? Where is this year going to in such a hurry? Geez Louise. I am still feeling pretty anti-blog. I don't know why. I miss it, but I don't wanna write. Nope. Hello again. I'm back in New york after a week on the west coast. I have a couple pictures in my camera to share, but other than that, I've gotten used to not blogging, and I don't really feel like it now. Uh, but I may just change my mind as I type this. The phrase "just do it" comes to mind. Oh. My camera cord is not here. Nevermind.

Oh, also, I let my domain name expire. (I like to live dangerously) I bought it again, but registered it with someone else and haven't yet worked out "pointing" it to my website again. (Or whatever it is I'm supposed to do with it.) It seems I've been letting a lot go lately. (Don't worry, that'll all change soon!) I think I'll walk to work today. Three Things.
1. I got another free haircut at Bumble and Bumble yesterday! This time I didn't fall asleep (although I got very sleepy) and I like it. Um, but I think I want more of a change next time, so I may go elsewhere for my next haircut. We'll see, I do like free.

2. I've had Loehman's credit in my wallet for a while... it's been burning a hole. It happened to be within walking distance from BBU so I went with intentions of buying a new handbag. I bought a scarf that makes me giggle instead. A new scarf is the last thing I need, but it has two big fur balls on the ends! I couldn't resist. Mine is black and grey striped and has big black fur balls. It did not come with a hat and did not come in a heart shaped box. Also, I think my fur balls might be a little bigger... but otherwise, this is what it looks like:

P.S. It was on super duper sale, half off of the clearance sale price, so I got a pretty good deal too!

3. I'm going to the Bay Area this weekend! Sunday, right after Valentines Day! (I love Valentines Day!) I'm so excited for this weekend to come! And the weekend after that, I'll be in Portland for a few days! Hooray!

Show and Tell Today!

Thing a Day.
Day 4- A while ago, my roommate, Sigrid, gave me a little glass tile she picked up and asked me to make her a ring. Surprisingly, she had never seen one before, and, overwhelmed with the plethora of ideas as to what she could put behind the tile, she decided to leave it plain. Ignoring her request, I oxidized the silver underneath and scratched her name into it. I hope she likes it- I'm going to give it to her for Valentine's Day.

Day 5- I made nothing. Really. I don't even think I made food to eat.

Day 6- I ordered a bunch of silver hearts and stars about a year ago because I thought they were cute. I didn't know what to do with them when I got them, but right before selling at the Market over the weekend, I thought, "Oh! I should just make some little stud earrings!" So I did.
Day 7- I made my boyfriend sell for me while I walked around! Yay! Actually, he was way more help than I could have ever expected! (Timmy, thank you soooo much!)
Day 8- While sitting at my table with extremely sloooowwww sales, I made a few necklaces. (It was a beautiful weekend, and it seems everyone was out enjoying the nice sun shiney break.) I didn't take pictures though, but soon I will! I will!

Day 9- I made a heart out of sandpaper. Which reminded me of the time I made a bra and panties out of sandpaper for a textiles class in college. For the life of me, I can't remember what the assignment was, and I always think it's a little unnerving to suddenly remember something that I had previously completely forgotten.

Day 10- Today I came home from work and made a heart out of cheese. Then I ate it.

I don't have a fever and that is good.

My Bloody Valentine, a new ring.

Look, a silver hematite ring! Hematite is said to improve relationships. (If one of yours needs work, this would surely make a pretty great Valentines Day present!)

The name, hematite, comes from the Greek word for blood. According to Native American folklore, war paint made from hematite will make one invincible in battle.

Thing a Day
February 1- I made progress. (I had my new resume proof read.) Not a tangible thing? Eh, what do you know? Admittedly, it's not a great way to start this thing a day month, but progress is progress, and I think progress is good. I also made a resolution to not watch TV in my apartment this month.

February 2- I made an amendment to my no TV resolution. I decided to watch 24. And then I realized Gossip Girl was on too! Forget about the no TV thing. Sheesh! What was I thinking? I made myself a root beer and whiskey. It seems I'm not too good at this thing a day thing. I haven't even posted on the Thing-A-Day blog yet. I'll be better, I promise. (and no, my fingers are not crossed!)Oh yeah, I made microwave caramel corn too! Yummy. So easy. I popped 2 bags of microwave popcorn, then in another bowl, melted a stick of butter, 1/4 c. corn syrup, and 1 c. brown sugar. Put it all in a paper bag, shook it around a bit, put it back in the microwave for about 45 seconds, and poured it out into a pan lined with wax paper to cool. Then I sprinkled it with sea salt because I like salty sweet things.

February 3- I re-sized a ring to be sent out tomorrow, and I reticulated a piece of silver to fit into my new necklace! It took A LOT of trial and error, but I love it now! It's a little hard from the picture to tell what it really looks like... the blaring white thing is a super shiny piece of reticulated silver. It's attached to the chain and hangs inside its oxidized silver casing.

Chalcopyrite Ring, Hooray!

I just listed this on Etsy. I had it for sale a the last few shows I did in December. There were lots of compliments. Oohs, ahhhs and friends squealing for their friends to come look... but whenever someone asked me what kind of rock it was, my mind went blank. I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called. I knew it had a long intimidating name. Ahhh, the wonders of the internet! The rock is called chalcopyrite pronounced kal-co-pie-right. Not so intimidating after all! I set it in sterling silver with a pretty large bezel. It's got a nice weight to it, and it's a good sized rock, sure to get noticed.
PLUS! According to the Shamans Crystal website, "This mineral increases your perceptive abilities. It assists you in pulling ethereal energy to you to bring information to you and others. Chalcopyrite can be used to break up energy blockages and can open up and cleanse the Crown Chakra. It makes an excellent meditation stone."

Three things for Thursday.

1. Free stuff! Across the nation, select department stores are giving away free beauty products. Find out more info at cosmeticssettlement.com. Apparently from 1994-2003 they overcharged or something of that sort and have settled a lawsuit resulting in free stuff for um, anyone. (It's supposed to be for customers who bought cosmetics, etc. from them during that time period. They're giving it all away until January 26th or until they run out.) Cool.

2. I really don't like photographing jewelry. It's not fun. However, I'm happy to now have new stuff on Etsy!

3. Quote of the day: Calder's jewelry is as pretty as his mobiles--some of it too is "mobile"--and often more seriously lovely. Galena Rock Ring!

Silicon Galena is a transformation stone, effective when embarking on a personal spiritual journey. It's also supposed to counter negative effects of long hours in front of the computer. (Really, this gemstone website says so!)

At the very least, this ring's sheer size should do a decent job of protecting you on said journey. If someone gets in your way, just whack 'em in the head. Very glam indeed. Check it out, newly listed on Etsy.

And by that, I mean SNEAK PEEK! It's cold outside. It snowed all day yesterday and was absolutely beautiful. (Today it's just cold.) I saw at least 4 tiny snowmen atop cars while walking to and from the Met- pictured is a particularly cute one, complete with a scarf and carrot nose. The Calder exhibit was well worth it. It'll be at the Metropolitan Museum of Art until March 1, 2009 so if you're in the area, definitely check it out! I had no idea from the pictures I'd seen how enormous his jewelry actually was. I mean, I knew it was big, but my goodness! (more on Calder's jewelry some other time)
Anyway, as I said before, it's cold outside. I'm staying inside to take pictures. (my least favorite thing about online selling) Hopefully- if I stay motivated- I'll have lots of new things ready to list on Etsy tomorrow. Until then, here's a sneak peek at my new Galena ring! Use it in a sentence. I'll give you a gold star. Speaking of memes, by the way, MuntedKowhai tagged me to list my 5 favorite loves way back in 2008- I know, it seems like an eternity ago! I put it off long enough. I'll play now.

My 5 favorite loves of the day:

1. Billy Blanks. He makes me laugh. I'm glad I have Tae Bo dvds. ("Remember, your legs are like car tires. They gotta carry you around for the rest of your life.")
2. I got a new coat yesterday! (I don't have a picture though)

3. It snowed again! Which means a. it's warmer and b. it's pretty. (nope, no picture of snow either)

4. I love my new top secret necklaces! They're hanging in my studio, and I've made 10 so far. Top secret only because I haven't taken pictures yet. (I know, what a cop out.) They'll be up on Etsy soon though... by Wednesday? Hmmm... could be. Could be. They're pretty. I've got bracelet designs in my head that will come to fruition soon too! Yay!

Seth Godin's Blog has a post today entitled "Don't get sued" which basically warns to be careful what you write online. Which reminds me- when I started this blog, I vowed never to talk about work in any detail- other than jewelry work, of course. After all, if you can't say something nice, well, you know.
Ahh, but what's a rule if not to be bent? Besides, my non-jewelry work happened to be jewelry related the other night.
No details. L.L. Cool J introduced Russell Simmons, who was receiving an award for Simmons Jewelry, and during his speech mentioned how much he loves his green bracelet. Blah, blah, blah, his green bracelet. I wanted to check it out. I actually think it's pretty cool. I really like the rough diamond inside its diamond cage. I'm not crazy about the rest, but it's for a good cause. I think. Take a look. It's for the Diamond Empowerment Fund (DEF) "to raise money for the development and empowerment of the people and communities in Africa where diamonds are a natural resource."

Then Russell came on stage talking about how "diamonds equal love" and how we (the jewelry industry) need to reinforce the idea to consumers that the bigger the diamond, the bigger the heart- or something to that effect. Ugh. I suppose I don't know enough about diamonds. I think they're pretty, but I don't use them and have never bought them. The idea that any store bought object, well, any physical object really, EQUALS love is absurd. The fact that any big industry has it in them to PUSH this idea makes me sick to my stomach. Then again, that's fundamentally what a capitalist economy is based on, right? In a nutshell. Stuff equals love. Buy stuff for the people you love so that others can buy stuff for the people they love, and so on. It makes me want to reconsider my part in all of it.

I think I get the point though, the mission of the DEF is to keep diamond miners in Africa employed. And it's good to stay employed. So, no details. No details. I need to do some research.
